Trails of the Wild Selkirks focuses on the southern terminus of the Selkirk Mountain range. Beginning roughly outside of Spokane, Washington, this book describes virtually every documented trail in this beautiful stretch of mountainous terrain to the Canadian border. Granite peaks, lush temperate rain forests, and beautiful alpine lakes make up a wilderness paradise that is little known outside the Inland Northwest region.
Author Dennis Nicholls has written a comprehensive guide to the Selkirks after walking nearly 1300 miles on the 170 trails detailed in this book.
Sandpoint, Idaho is the perfect base for exploring this area. Most of the hikes are easily done as a dayhike from there, although overnight or multiple day backpacking trips are the favorite option for the more remote locales. If you are planning to visit North Idaho and plan on hiking in the Sandpoint area, we would highly recommend this book for planning your adventure.
